You saw in earlier chapters that both session and message-driven beans allow you to listen for lifecycle callbacks like PostConstruct and PreDestroy. Similarly, entities allow you to receive callbacks for lifecycle events like persist, load, update, and remove. Just as in session and message-driven beans, you can do almost anything you need to in the lifecycle callback methods, including invoking an EJB, or using APIs like JDBC or JMS. In the persistence realm, however, lifecycle callbacks are typically used to accomplish such tasks as logging, validating data, auditing, sending notifications after a database change, or generating data after an entity has been loaded. In a sense, callbacks are the database triggers of JPA. Table 9.5 lists the callbacks supported by the API.

Pointcut expressions in JAC are composed of three subexpressions. A fourth is added when programming distributed applications. The joinpoints that are included in a pointcut are either method executions or constructor executions. JAC also performs an automatic bytecode analysis to classify the methods that are defined in an application. The purpose of this analysis is to detect whether the methods access or modify the object state. This information is made available in the pointcut definition language, and you can define pointcuts that include all the methods that perform read or write operations on designated fields, for example. The three subexpressions that are contained in a pointcut definition deal with the names of classes, objects, and methods, respectively. The subexpressions are referred to as class expressions, object expressions, and method expressions. These expressions can be thought of as filters. Their purpose is to filter a set of classes, objects, or methods and retain only those that match the expressions. The roles of the three expressions can be defined as follows: Class expression: A class expression defines a filter for class names. The filtering is performed on fully qualified class names for example, names that include the package and class identifiers. Object expression: An object expression defines a filter for object names. All business objects that are instantiated by JAC are automatically associated with a name. This name plays a role largely similar to that of a regular Java reference. The purpose is to uniquely identify each created object so that you can aspectize certain objects of a class (to customize their behaviors) while leaving others unchanged. The object names are automatically created by appending instance numbers to the class name. For example, the name order#0 identifies the first instance of the Order class.

Entity lifecycle methods need not be defined in the entity itself. Instead, you can choose to define a separate entity listener class to receive the lifecycle callbacks. We highly recommend this approach, because defining callback methods in the entities themselves will clutter up the domain model you might have carefully constructed. Moreover, entity callbacks typically contain crosscutting concerns rather than business logic directly pertinent to the entity. For our purposes, we ll explore the use of entity callbacks using separate listener classes, default listeners, and the execution order of entity listeners if you have multiple listeners.

When XDoclet attempts to generate the home interface for this bean, it will see that for the JNDI name it should use the value specified in the Ant property user.bean.jndi. Ant replaces the named property in the source file with the value contained in the build.xml file. Using this system, you can replace every hardcoded value in your source XDoclet JavaDoc tags with Ant property names. The advantage of this system is that it centralizes all of your property values into your build.xml file, and you no longer have to alter source code to change a value. XDoclet allows you to specify everything about a bean in its source file. Not everything is included in this chapter, but the list includes security roles, EJB relationships, method permission, transactions, and more. By moving all the values of these various elements into Ant properties in the build.xml file, you create a centralized control of the various values that can be changed at build time in a single file.
